Somatic Movement & the Healing Connection: A Retreat for Adult Cancer Survivors - Somatics is the umbrella term for techniques and approaches that focus on the individual developing and deepening a sense of the self within the body. One of it's core principles is that our body has a knowingness that speaks to us about what brings us towards wholeness and satisfaction and what binds us to struggle and pain. Therapeutic and somatic movement approaches to wellness guide us to better understand the mind body connection and can help us to more easily, creatively and effectively resolve life challenges and body tensions. In this retreat, we will journey through our personal relationship with cancer to discover how movement can help us experience healing, in addition to understand how cancer has affected us physically, mentally and/or emotionally. This workshop will combine gentle and restorative yoga, visualization, deep breathing and relaxation techniques, in addition to journaling and verbal sharing with other workshop participants. It will also include an element of fun and play with movement.
This retreat is for adults who have been diagnosed with cancer, whether currently in treatment/recovery or who have been in remission or cancer free for any length of time. Bring a journal, a pen and clothes and shoes that are comfortable to move in. No yoga/movement experience necessary. Dance as Embodied Knowing: A Community Movement Workshop - Dance can bring the practitioner joy, wellness, compassionate self awareness, self acceptance and transformation of body, mind and spirit. Whether practiced in contemporary forms such as creative or expressive dance, popular forms such as the salsa or meringue, or in a meditative form practiced with an inward focus, dance has been used for centuries as a way for the practitioner to connect with oneself and others in community. In this workshop we will use yoga to warm up and open our bodies, then move into working with various forms of dance, including YogaDance, Zumba Gold, creative movement, expressive dance, yoga trance dance, dance prayers and dance meditation. Dancing and moving with oneself and in community with other workshop participants, we will be introduced to and experientially explore how yoga and dance can be a vehicle to understanding ourselves and how we relate to others. Breaks will be given throughout the workshop to refresh and recharge. No experience with dance necessary. Experience practicing yoga helpful, but not required. All levels accommodated.
